Shining Light in the Darkness

Today, I watched “Virtual Cultures in Pandemic Times”. There are a couple things I want to point out here.

First, depending on where someone lives and what they do for a living, the pandemic may very well be the darkest days they have ever lived in their life. Some people may have even lost their minds due to it. Individuals were told they had to stay home and socially distance from others. This led to a new pandemic that we are currently dealing with today: loneliness. For many, Second Life and other virtual worlds such as Animal Crossing were a great opportunity to connect with others and socialize again.

Second, I feel that this video relates to what we have done in this class because everybody who used these virtual worlds to find hope during the pandemic were essentially following their own hero’s journey by interacting with objects and environments that the developers of said world had created.

I can’t say that I personally know anyone this happened to, but I am very confident that the virtual worlds of Second Life, Animal Crossing, etc. probably saved many peoples’ lives. It gave them a chance to reconnect with society, establish and maintain relationships, and have a safe place to be themselves.

I would say the best way to market our project would be through the virtual world itself, social media, signage on the Peninsula College campus, and through the college website.

Strategic Storytelling

It’s no secret that people tend to process information that is in story form better than information that isn’t. This is for several reasons. One, we tend to be able to retain and remember the information better. Reading something in story form typically will make it seem more significant and interesting to the reader, therefore, causing them to better remember. Something else the story form does, is help viewers relate to the character, share perspectives, and empathize with them. This makes it more personal to us.

Another appealing aspect to information told in story form is it isn’t just an assortment of random facts. It is a series of events that demonstrate cause and effect. Whenever someone reads something or watches something, they are more than likely trying to seek out the story being told within it. Story telling can be used for all sorts of multimedia tactics. It is employed in marketing and advertising all the time. In fact, I would say that if your ad or marketing strategy doesn’t somehow involve telling a story about a problem and how your product or service can solve that problem for the consumer, then it probably isn’t going to be very effective!

Proposal – The 4PA Story

THE 4PA STORY

(May come up with better title later)

A ten minute documentary that introduces the founder of 4PA, Joe DeScala, tells his story, explains what 4PA is all about, the impact it has had on the community, and goes over how to join the effort and contribute to the cause.

Statement

Port Angeles is a beautiful area. If we all pitch in and work together, we can ensure that it stays that way.

Background & Need

The Port Angeles local non-profit organization, 4PA, has been around for a bit now. Their goal: to clean up the trash and other items left behind in places where the unsheltered have set up camp. They also want to help these unsheltered individuals gain access to basic services and eventually housing to get them out of that situation in the first place. However, I believe a lot of residents of the area still might not be very familiar with what is how and how it operates. I truly believe it is a much needed asset to the local community and I can only hope that my documentary production can be used to inform, educate, and inspire others to volunteer and/or donate to the cause. Port Angeles needs this. This town has changed so much since I was a child. It’s time to make Port Angeles the clean and safe town we know it can be.

Approach, Form, & Style

This short documentary will be composed of a few different pieces and perspectives. First, we will hear Joe DeScala’s story. We will hear what inspired him to start this all in the first place. We will also hear from him about what all it entails and what it takes to keep this thing moving. Then we will hear from other board members, employees, and/or volunteers. I hope to be able to interview volunteers and donors and hear from them about how rewarding those things can be. Lastly, if I am able to find a willing subject, I would really like to hear from an individual that they have helped find housing and other services. A 4PA success story if you will. I’m hoping I could get their perspective as well. I hope that 4PA will be able to use my production to promote themselves and inspire others to join, volunteer, and/or donate to the cause.
